At Goldman Sachs, I first began to consider the disciplines of information architecture and interaction design (although both terms – as well as the fields themselves – were in their infancy). I was half of web design and usability team in the technology department for the Investment Banking Division, overseeing the structure and design of a variety of internally used applications, including reporting, market data, and document management systems.
One of the interesting aspects of this role was the creation and management of a detailed system of design standards, which were used across all intranet web applications. At first, the main goal of the standards was to ensure visual consistency. Over time, this domain expanded to include standard interactions and culminated in the development of a detailed design pattern library.
